Larry Macner 2017 Veteran of the Year

Lawrence was born on January 1954, in Utica, New York. His career with the U.S. Air Force includes 6 years of Active Duty, starting in 1973, and 22 years with the N.Y. Air National Guard, starting in 1986, for a total of 28 years. His rank at discharge was Master Sergeant (E-7) His military occupational specialty was as a Jet Engine Technician and as a Quality Assurance Technician. As a technician, he performed jet engine maintenance on both fixed (FB-111A, F-4C, T-33, A-10, and F-16) and rotary wing (UH-1N and CH-3E) aircraft. He received his technician training at the Jet Engine Mechanic school at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. His duty stations include Plattsburgh AFB, NY; Keflavik Naval Air Station, Iceland; Andrews AFB, Maryland. During his tenure with the N.Y. Air National Guard, he was deployed to several bases around the world including: Volk Field, Wisconsin; Patrick AFB,Florida; Nellis AFB,Nevada; Cold Lake Air Base, Alberta Province, Canada; Gander Field, Newfoundland; Lechfeld Air Base, Germany; Incirlik AFB, Turkey (Operation Northern Watch); and Al Kharj (Operation Desert Storm)/Prince Sultan (Operation Southern Watch) Royal Saudi Air Base, Saudi Arabia. Awards and recognition while in service include the Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Commendation Medals, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and many others for a total of 17 Federal Service Ribbons. FULTON LIONS CLUB

The Fulton Lions Club is proud to once again join Fulton’s Service Clubs as part of Memorial Day Salute. The Fulton Lions Club is part of Lions Club International (LCI), which was founded by Melvin Jones in 1917. It is the largest service club in the world with over one million members in more than 170 countries. The Fulton club, with 30 members, was chartered in 1953 and is one of the largest and most active Lions clubs in Central New York. Lions Clubs are committed to the preservation of sight and hearing. The Fulton Lions Club provides financial assistance for those in need of eyeglasses, eye exams and hearing aids. During the past year, the Fulton club has provided over $10,000 in sight and hearing assistance. In addition, the Fulton club collects used eyeglasses for refurbishment and redistribution at Fulton Walmart, Fulton Medicine Place and other local businesses. The Fulton club also supports the Guiding Eyes for the Blind program that trains Seeing Eye dogs for the blind, and the Finger Lakes Lions Hearing Foundation. Among other community and charitable organizations that receive support from Fulton Lions are Aurora, Blessings in a Backpack, Catholic Charities and Salvation Army food pantries, Friends of Great Bear, Fulton Blockbuilders, Fulton Pop Warner, Fulton Family YMCA, Fulton Youth Hockey, Golisano Children’s Hospital, Oswego County Visually Impaired Group, United Way Stone Soup & Stuff a Bus, and the Upstate Center for Vision Research. 2017 Poster Contest Winners

The 36th Annual Memorial Day Salute Committee recently announced the winners of the Poster Contest held to create a patriotic poster in keeping with the theme “Stars and Stripes Forever”. Taking first place as the winner of this year’s poster contest is Stacey Sereno with second place going to Victoria Izyk. Tied for third place is Alexis Carpenter and Madison Washburn. All the posters submitted for consideration will be displayed at the event being held this year on May 27th at the Fulton Community Center.

FULTON MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE ANNOUNCES MAIN ACT

The 36th Annual Fulton Memorial Day Salute Committee has announced this year’s main entertainment act will be Dan Elliott and the Monterays. Originally formed in East Syracuse in 1962 as the Monterays, Dan Elliott and the Monterays are known as Upstate New York’s longest working band. This year they are celebrating 55 years in the music business. The Band’s current lineup features Dan Elliott – lead vocals, Ron Lauback – lead guitar and vocals, Ronnie Dark – bass guitar and vocals, Wayne Muller – keyboards and vocals, and Dave Miller, drums and vocals. The Fulton Memorial Day Salute will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the Fulton Community Center. It will feature a parade, rides, food and entertainment. Dan Elliott and the Monterays will perform at 8:00 p.m. to be followed by a fireworks display over Lake Neatahwanta.

Each Fall, the Fulton Veteran’s Council chooses a Veteran of the Year from among the membership of several Fulton veteran’s organizations. For 2017, Lawrence “Larry” Macner, left, was named Veteran of the Year and is seen with Fulton Mayor Ron Woodward. Larry was born on January 1954, in Utica, New York. His career with the U.S. Air Force includes 6 years of Active Duty, starting in 1973, and 22 years with the N.Y. Air National Guard, starting in 1986, for a total of 28 years. His rank at discharge was Master Sergeant (E-7). Macner will be the Grand Marshal for the Memorial Day Salute Parade on May 27th. The parade is sponsored by the Fulton Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary and Sunrise Rotary Service Clubs, in cooperation with the Fulton Veteran’s Council.
